TVB 3DTV Tech Alert: Wi-Fi-like 3D Transmissions

An Israeli fabless semiconductor company is demonstrating high-definition, 3D video transmission over a wireless home digital interface, or WHDI. Amimon Inc. is reported to be demonstrating a prototype wireless system for transmitting 24 fps, HD, 3D, 1080p video over WHDI in the 5 GHz band. Tech-On says the Amimon intends to develop the system into adapters for wirelessly connection 3D Blu-ray recorder/players with 3DTV sets. It’s said to transmit data at up to 3 Gbps.

WHDI is similar to WiFi, which also uses 5 Ghz spectrum. The WHDI licensing body announced the addition of 3D formats to its specification last month. The updated spec–1.4a–is scheduled for a fourth-quarter, 2010 release. A 2.0 update, expected during the second quarter of next year, will accommodate “mobile device integration through reduced power consumption and footprint,” according to a release from Amimon.

Sony Bravia KDL-55HX800 Review

Sony Bravia KDL-55HX800
When Sony’s Bravia KDL-55HX800 ($3,399.99 list) arrived in PC Labs we couldn’t wait to take a crowbar to it. (It came packed in a massive wooden shipping crate.) Once it was unpacked, however, we handled it with kid gloves. After all, this is the first 3D HDTV we’re testing, and a fairly expensive one at that. Although the HX800 series is the least expensive of Sony’s family of 3D HDTVs (the LX900 and HX909 are the other two), you wouldn’t know it by this 55-inch HDTV’s hefty $3,400 price tag. And, by the time you add in $150 3D glasses for the family and a 3D transmitter, you’re in for around $4,000. And that doesn’t include a 3D-capable Blu-ray player or discs. As with most brand-new technologies, you’re paying a premium to be in on the ground floor. But the good news is that besides 3D, you’ll get the latest TV tech including LED backlighting and a fast 240Hz refresh rate, which translates to a beautiful 2D picture too.

Approval for DVB 3DTV commercial requirements

Approval for DVB 3DTV commercial requirements
The DVB has given its approval to the commercial requirements for a 3DTV Frame Compatible Plano-Stereoscopic system, typically deployed as a side-by-side format.

The 12-page document available from the DVB website has been directed towards the provision of 3DTV services using the same infrastructure that has already been deployed by pay-TV operators for the introduction of HD services.

However, the door has been left open to possible future enhancements to the Frame Compatible system, with some DVB members expressing a preference for a separate system altogether. Last Week Broadband TV News revealed that over half of EBU members would prefer the adoption of a Service Compatible format that would save bandwidth by broadcasting additional 3D information with a regular 2D signal. Service Compatible would however require the purchase of a new receiver and TV display.

Video games will drive the 3D TV market

Video games will drive the 3D TV market
The most significant 3D development occurring just now is the conversion from 2D to 3D in the gaming market. Ubisoft estimates that around 50% of all games will be in the new format by 2012.

Murray Pannell, Ubisoft Head of Marketing commented: “The adoption of 3DTV will start slowly,” “But like HDTV, I wouldn’t rule out the fact that it will be installed in everyone’s living room in three years’ time”.

Pannell believes that 3D gaming could drive the 3D TV market in its early stages; and with the planned release of a number of 3D titles this year, gaming will certainly have an impact on the number of 3D enabled TVs sold.

Become An ‘Insider’, Win A Panasonic 3DTV!

Become An ‘Insider’, Win A Panasonic 3DTV!
I recently went along to one of these special ‘insider’ events where members of the Soup community (Soup is the team who runs the Panasonic Insider Crew) were invited to experience Panasonic’s top of range 3DTV before it hit the market. Experts from Panasonic as well as industry experts like cinematographers were also on hand to ask about what’s going on under the hood.

It was a good night with good people, good food and a few drinks, plus a great chance to hear what people are really thinking about what’s new.

Ubisoft predicts general adoption of 3D TV within three years

Ubisoft predicts general adoption of 3D TV within three years
Publisher Ubisoft has predicted that 3D TVs could have a presence in the majority of homes within three years.

The Assassin’s Creed gamemaker told Eurogamer the support the technology has garnered from major firms such as Sony and Sky is likely to ensure that 3D TV sets are adopted in the same way that HDTVs have been.

Sony is pushing 3D technology via both its TV offerings and through the promise of 3D-enabled PlayStation 3 games, including the flagship shooter Killzone 3.

Ubisoft has also been a prominent supporter of the technology, having released the 3D-compatible James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game last year.

Stonefish Avoid It By All Means

Stonefish Avoid It By All Means
Stonefish look really cool, but they’ll kill you. The fish can be fatal to other animals, and even humans. They are found in the coastal regions of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, near Australia. They typically live in the ocean, but some have been found in rivers.

Stonefish, scientific name Synanceia, excrete neurotoxins through their glands at the base of their needle-like dorsal fins, which stick up when the animal feels threatened. For the most part they go unnoticed, though, because, as their common name suggests, they look like stones and blend in with the bottom of the sea.

Taryn Fairbanks Charged for Sex with Minor
According to the Seattle Times, the 33-year-old resigned from her job teaching language arts and overseeing the school newspaper just weeks ago.
